Collect remnants of Seattle's tropical past on Tiger Mountain, near Issaquah. We will find amber specimens in 3 colors: yellow, orange, and blue, and occasional tropical plant fossils. We´ll examine the geologic forces which shaped our region, and investigate historic coal-mining ruins. Access requires a two mile hike, round trip, with little elevation change. Minimim age 7 years.

Kids and parents learn to identify minerals as they dig for treasures on this exciting day-trip near North Bend. This is our most adventuresome family trip. Kids can fill their backpacks with pretty rocks! Minimum age 6 years, due to steep hike.

We'll collect rocks, minerals, and fossils as we explore the Cascade and Okanogan mountains. Drive at your own pace as we rendezvous at 4 collecting localities in 2 days, then spend the third day collecting at the famous Rock Candy Mine.

Geologist Bob Jackson is the trip leader and a fund of geologic information.  Ask if you'd like to see samples he's collected on any of our other trips.

Colourful Crystals is our special family trip to Rock Candy Mountain, usually held the day after a Vugs trip and using the same freshly blasted areas. Fluorite crystals are so abundant on these tours that you will be standing on specimens as you collect others. Kids will love hunting for sparkly quartz geodes in gemmy green fluorite. Offered once or twice per season for individual booking, or private groups of 6 or more can book this trip on July weekdays.  Email us to book your group of 6 or more. We do not book private groups on our published Colourful Crystal dates.
