The Fine Print

Field Mineralogy - 3rd through 8th

Students collect and learn to identify quartz and pyrite, tourmaline, chrysocolla, and 5 other minerals while learning Cascadian geology. Fourth grade and older students can also learn gold panning techniques. A 1/2 mile forest hike brings you to our copper prospect overlooking the Snoqualmie River valley.

$450 per trip (up to 30 people)

  • Meet in North Bend, carpool only, drive 24 miles on logging road.  Minimum drive time from I-90 at North Bend is 90 minutes each way.
  • Maximum 30 people, includes students, chaperones, and teachers.   Hike is up a steep hill, over uneven ground.
  • Road access requires high clearance vehicles, like SUV's and pickups.  Sedans, station wagons, and minivans will bottom out on this road.  4WD is not necessary.

Field Paleontology - 1st through 6th

We will find amber and plant fossils, while examining the geologic forces which shaped our region. Kids learn the real science concepts behind Jurassic Park, with an appreciation for the rarity of the amber they collect. There are only five places in the U.S. where amber can be readily collected; we are fortunate to have one in our "backyard".

Access requires a two mile hike, round trip, with little elevation change.

$370 per trip (up to 35 people)

  • Meet near Issaquah, carpool (on easy gravel road),  or bus (all pavement access for bus dropoff). Bus hike is 1/2 mile longer.
  • Maximum 35 people per trip, includes students, chaperones, and teachers.

    $430 per trip (36 to 40 people)
per trip (41 to 45 people)

Glowing Rocks - 3rd through 6th

Collect minerals which glow in the dark! Only offered as an evening trip. Students learn about the science of fluorescence, before collecting abundant specimens of calcite and opal. An easy 100 yard hike brings you to a hillside speckled with fluorescent minerals.

  • Meet near Issaquah. Easy gravel road for carpool.
  • Maximum 15 students, 1:3 adult:student ratio required. No more than 20 people total are permitted on this trip.
  • We use Superbright (tm) lights, which require an adult to carry the battery pack, while the child carries the light. For adults bringing more than 1 child, the kids will work together with one light.
Sedimentary Rock & Roll - 2nd through 5th

Our newest trip was custom-designed for the Bellevue, WA school district's STEM program, and is open to everyone.  Working in multiple sedimentary environments (beach, stream, lagoon), students perform the same tests that professional sedimentologists use to characterize sediment sources and deposition types, then collect Miocene fossil plant specimens to they can keep for further study.

  • Meet near Issaquah.  Locality is accessible for buses or carpools.
  • Maximum 35 people, includes students, teachers and chaperones
The Fine Print (rules for all school trips):

Field trips are held rain or shine. We normally only cancel if winds are above 20 mph, which makes it dangerous to be in the forest. We accept payment by school purchase order or check. Classes must be accompanied by their usual classroom teacher. We cannot take classes accompanied by substitute teachers. Parents and friends enjoy our school trips as well as kids. We're happy to have others along, but this may raise the group price. We have a limit of 35 people (includes students, staff, parents, and anyone else who comes through our gates) per trip at the base price. If your group arrives with more than 35 people (Amber trip), please be prepared to pay an additional fee.  We cannot take more than 35 on the Crystal trip.
